Chapter 27

The Transformation Moment

Remember David and the elevator? Here's what happened in that five-minute CEO conversation:

"David, I've noticed you've been doing interesting work in Product. Tell me about your vision for the Singapore expansion."

David could have launched into an eager pitch. Instead: "I'm not sure I have enough context to have a vision yet. What specific challenges are you seeing?"

The CEO leaned in, intrigued by someone who asked questions instead of having all the answers. They talked for thirty minutes. David listened 80% of the time.

By the end, the CEO said: "I like how you think. I want you to lead this project."

David: "I'm honored. Let me think about it and get back to you tomorrow."

The CEO, used to people jumping at opportunities: "Take your time. But I hope you'll say yes."

By not grasping at power, David accumulated more than he ever could have by chasing it.
