Chapter 14

The Paradox of Choice

0 min read

Psychologist Barry Schwartz identified a troubling paradox: having too many choices makes us less happy, not more. When researchers gave shoppers twenty-four jam varieties to sample, only 3% made a purchase. When they offered just six varieties, 30% bought jam. More choice led to less satisfaction and fewer decisions.

This paradox plays out everywhere: - Dating apps offer endless options, yet people report more loneliness - Streaming services provide infinite entertainment, but we spend more time browsing than watching - Career flexibility increases anxiety rather than satisfaction - Social media multiplies connections while decreasing meaningful relationships

The promise of choice was freedom and happiness. The reality is paralysis and regret.
