With power comes responsibility. Cultural synthesis can create tremendous value, but it also risks appropriation, dilution, or exploitation.
Ethical synthesis requires:
Respect: Deep understanding before adaptation Attribution: Acknowledging cultural sources Benefit Sharing: Ensuring origin cultures benefit Authenticity: Maintaining cultural integrity Reciprocity: Creating mutual value Humility: Recognizing what you don't understand
Disney's "Moana" exemplifies ethical synthesis. They spent five years researching Polynesian culture, formed an Oceanic Cultural Trust of advisors, and ensured Pacific Islander representation in cast and crew. The film celebrated culture rather than appropriating it⁵⁰.
